Hello everyone! I wanted to let you know about some big news that is happening around here. Aside from having a successful IVF transfer this past month, yay!
We have decided to add on to our house!
My father-in-law has been with us for about 7 months now and we feel like it is time for him to have a space of his own. Our house right now has a separate little building that is attached to the house by the roof. We have been using the space for our shop all this time.
The space as-is, is too small for an apartment so we will be adding on to the back of it. I will be updating you all on the progress.
If you haven’t joined Periscope yet you should. It is where I will be sharing live video updates on the progress of the addition!
I hope I can count on you guys for help on make some of the color decisions and other features! Today I will show you some of my thoughts for the kitchen, as well as some wants and wishes.
Here goes our favorite things at Hawthorne and Main!
What are your thoughts on natural wood? Is it coming back into style?
I picked up some kitchen cabinet second hand, I actually need to tell you guys the story about how I acquired these. It is pretty good one. They are a blond natural wood color. In the beginning I was going to paint them white, but as time goes on, I am considering leaving them.
The elements that I love in this picture are the floor and counter tops. I want to put a rustic wood tile on the floor and I would love to do some sort of DIY white counter top. Plus, don’t you just love those bar stools!
The feature that caught my eye here are the light fixtures. I am such a fan of rustic decor. I think that one of these pendant lights above the sink would me aaaahhhhh-mazing!
This is a wish list want. We did not discuss this when we drew up the plan for the building. But after doing some window shopping online (is that a thing online) I have loved the look of open beam ceilings.
What are your thoughts on the open beams?
As another space saver, I am planning to add barn doors wherever I can. Not only do they save on space but I really like the look of them. I may or may not go with the DIY version.
Have you guys seen any good DIY barn door tutorials?
So there you have some of my ideas for the kitchen. Again this is going to be a small little apartment. Have you seen any good idea for small space living?
I think I could use all the help I can get.
**Also also, the addition needs a name. It is after all going to be its own separate living space, if you think of a cute name for a small little house send it my way!!
Have a wonderful weekend!!

That will be so fun! A little casita for him would be awesome! A couple years ago Royal and I did the Parade of Homes down there and SO MANY homes had them! Its such a smart idea. You could call it Casita de Papa! hehe

We are really excited about it Desiree! I know, where are so many houses with them down here. When we got this house I wasn’t even considering making the shop into an addition but it just worked out this way. I love the name! Thanks!

I love open shelving exposed beams and barn doors but…since your father in law will be living in the space I think he should have some input on what it looks like just my opinion very nice of you to give him his own space he deserves it
Hawthorne & Main says
Brenda that is a good point. I am sure he will go along with whatever I decide, that is just his personality. But, I should at least offer to let him in on a few of the decisions. It is always nice to feel included, especially since the space will be his! Thanks for your comment.

What great news (especially the IVF transfer!!) That will be so much fun to design a new space for your father in law! Those kitchen inspiration photos you posted are all gorgeous!
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks so much Jenny! We are super excited no both accounts. I hope you guys will help me decide on colors and other design elements. I still don’t trust myself fully yet! haha

Woohoo! Congrats on the add-on, Shonee! How fun! I’m totally in love with every one of those pictures above. Ha! I love love love those exposed beams in the one, it’s gorgeous. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Hawthorne & Main says
I know! Mine probably won’t be as amazing as those, I am keeping it on a budge. But, I think it will still turn out good! I think my father-in-law will be happy in his own space!

We had exposed beams in our last house and it was the reason I wanted top buy it! If I was to build a home it would include exposed beams! Have fun with your new project!
Hawthorne & Main says
That is awesome! I would love to have exposed beams! It seems that since I decided on this after the plans and trusses were ordered we will not be able to do it. But, there is always a next time!

It’s great to hear that your father-in-law has been living with you for the past 7 months, but it’s understandable that you’re considering giving him his own space. This could be a positive step towards harmonious cohabitation. In addition, if you need help with the legal applications of a renovation project or any other tasks related to creating a comfortable living space for your in-laws, you may want to consider using a case brief writing service https://order-essays.com/buy-case-brief-writing/ to help with the law planning and execution of this project.
