Have I ever told you about our keys and the many woes that go along with them. Lets see….the worst one was our side door drilling fiasco….. that was fun. Along with that and the many other incidents and frustration due to lost keys, I finally made this pretty cool DIY portable key holder. And actually it has has helped.
Today I want to share with you another super great way we have found to keep track of our keys, using this barn wood magnetic key holder.
One of the very coolest things about this project is that you don’t need to have access to barn wood to achieve this amazing barn wood look. I found a product that did all the awesome wood aging for me!!
Let me show you how I did it!!
Supplies you will need:
– Pine Boards- cut to how ever big you want your key holder to be
–Glue
-nails
Here is a look at the wood stain that I used. The product is called Weather Wood Stain. There are a few different colors to choose from. What is really cool about this product is that is reacts with the wood in order to achieve that weathered wood look that occurs naturally in wood, only this stuff does it super fast!! All you need to do is apply the stain generously and let it dry. Pretty soon you will start to see the wood change color….right before your eyes…..pretty cool.
Here is a picture of what the wood looked like before I put on any of the stain. Just regular old pine.
I applied the stain according to the manufacture directions.
After the stain was applied and allowed to dry I assembled the key holder. This is probably one of the easiest shelves to put together. The shorter board is used for the back and the wider board is used for the shelf. Using wood glue and a nail gun this was super easy to put together.
After the shelf was assembled I drilled three holes in the bottom of the shelf using a 1/2 inch drill bit. Be careful not to drill all the way through the board… This was the perfect size for the magnets. They were a little bit tight but using a hammer to gently tap them in worked perfect. I did add some glue under each magnet just to make sure they would stay put!

I have to say I was a little bit skeptical that the stain would work. But after using it I am totally excited that I have another way to make my own barn wood!
It is so easy to put our keys away now!!
