A couple of weeks ago I had an AHA moment. I pulled up all the rugs in the house, rolled them up and stashed them behind the couch, in the garage, and pretty much any where I could find a place.
What a weird thing to do!
Yes, yes, I know. My AHA moment was that I had decided to start to potty train. The method, diaper free. Basically the kid has been running around the house nakey ever since….haha jk… well, sort of.
Hence me taking up all the rugs. I already have a dog that has an occasional opps, I don’t need a kid making opps too! Ya know!
I thought, this will be perfect. She will hate the feeling of being wet and dirty. She is smart, so it will only take her one week. Pretty soon I will have my rugs back…….All will be well!
Oh boy was I wrong!
First off, she doesn’t mind being all wet and dirty.
Second, she insists on holding her pee for up to 5 hours because she does not want pee without a diaper on. When she finally does pee, she stands there with her legs crossed in this crying episode, its sad.
She is totally afraid of the potty. I have bribed her with one of her favorite treats, marshmallows.
She used to ask me all the time “Do you like marshmallows?”
I would reply “Yes, I do. Do you?”
It was a topic we talked about often.
I put a handful of marshmallows in a zip lock bag and taped them up to the wall. I would let her know daily that the marshmallows were there. If she wanted them she only had to sit on her potty.
The marshmallow talk ended that very day. We no long discuss if I like marshmallows or if she does.
I am trying to figure out what in the world is making this girl afraid of the potty.
If I ask her “Where do you go potty?” she runs to her potty so excited to show me. “Here, this is where I go!”
Ya right!
Alas…..
I have decide to get my rugs out again, give her a break and try again later. I don’t want to some how traumatize her.
I guess, since I will be getting my rugs out again I should have a friend over. Maybe she will bring her little girl and the two of them can play. We can sit and chat about my potty training fails while sipping on lemonade, from my brand new barn wood serving tray.
If by chance you might be having any guests this upcoming holiday season, or anytime for that matter. I have made this super cool serving tray that I am sharing over at AKA Design. I would love for you to stop by and say hi!

Potty Training is THE WORST! I was absolutely terrified of potty training but I just let her run the show and it was a lot easier. Don’t envy you at all! My only advice is don’t push and it will happen, she will get sick of the nappies (diapers) and want to use the potty. Love the tray by the way!

Oh my, I am just at a loss. I think you are totally right. I want her to get it, and she isn’t ready. I bet if I just back off and give her space she will eventually want to get rid of those diapers. I am getting my rugs out again today….:)

Love that tray! I sympathize with you on the potty training, I just finished potty training my last! I am so glad I wont have to do it again.
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks for the sympathy! I cannot, for the life of me figure out what the metal hurdle is for her. Physically she ready…. I guess we will wait a while and try again. So glad you are done potty training! You deserve a night out, seriously!

Potty training is different for every child. I remember my mom putting my little sister in silky little girl panties. They had a mommy daughter date and she got to go shopping and pick out her big girl panties. Her theory was that going potty in silky panties would be very uncomfortable. I’m pretty sure it worked. Of course that was long before the invention of pull-ups.
My sister, who has five children and has trained many more (she’s a foster parent), has used different methods with her children. My favorite is with one daughter she made a big deal of finding all the pull-ups and diapers in the house. She had her daughter throw them all away in a black garbage bag. That seemed to convince her that she was a big girl.
Hope you get past this stage fast 🙂

Haha, both of those are so funny! I love the idea of peeing in silk panties, haha. Kudos to your sister for potty training so many kids. I am seriously reconsidering how many kids I want. I am at a loss. I am hoping that if I give her a little space and time we will be able to move forward. Thanks for your comment, I really needed a laugh!

Okay I came over to be wowed by this completely gorgeous rustic tray with little glamorous silver feet… and instead read the cutest potty training story ever! She must really hate the potty to give up marsh-mellows! i would love for you to share this post at our Welcome Home Wednesday Link Party! It goes live every Wednesday at 7am CST… that’s tomorrow 😉
Hawthorne & Main says
Hey Besty! Thanks so much for stopping by. She really does hate the potty. I cannot figure out what mental barrier is holding her back…We will give her a break and try again later! I just linked up to your party. Thanks!
Beth says
Your tray is great! I can only assure you that one day, potty training will click for your daughter. One of my kids bypassed the potty and used the toilet instead. (Eventually.) It takes a while for some kids, but she’ll figure it out.)
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks Beth! Sometimes I honestly feel like she will never get it. I think we both need a break from potty training, haha! That is too funny that one of my kids passed up the potty and went for the toilet…. kids will do their own thing I guess. Thanks for stopping by today!

I hope you have better luck in the near future in the potty training. The tray looks pretty. thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks Vickie, me too! We have taken a break. I don’t know for how long either. I will give it a few weeks and try again. This whole potty training thing is tough, enough said. Have a great weekend!

Love the wood tray! I may have to go swipe some of hubbys umber and make me one! I am sorry about your potty training…My oldest took 2 months but I just kept trying. One day it just clicked with her. I cant explain it. My 2nd girl we made “magic water and it took two days. LOL
Next time you’re up for it, try using those blue colored toilet cleaners in your toilet. So she cam make green magic water. It worked for me!
Good luck!
Hawthorne & Main says
Thank you Christine! You totally should grab a scrap piece and make one! I never thought to use those colored tablets, but it just might work. She is very interested in stuff like that. My biggest problem is that she is totally and completely afraid of her potty. She cries and gets really upset when I ask her if she wants to sit on it. I think I was probably a little bit too intense with her, I can get like that. I am hoping a break will do both of us some good! That is too funny how different your kids reacted to learning how to use the potty. It really is true, everyone is different. Thanks for the tips!

I love your barn wood tray!! Such a great idea. The potty training story was pretty cute too. 🙂
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks Tonya! I love my tray too! I cannot wait to use it some more this holiday season. Oh my woes in potty training. It doesn’t help that I was already dreading it. Now that she is resisting so much I just don’t know what to do! I am hoping a little bit of time will give both of us a break, so that we can come back and approach it with a new attitude, here hoping anyway!

The tray is lovely! I really like the knobs as feet design. Pretty genius if you ask me. Good luck with potty training. You are right to take a break. It might last a month or two, but soon she’ll be willing to try again. I’ve potty-trained five and have one to go. It is the most dreaded episode of toddlerhood for me. It somehow gets done, though. Going over to AKA Design to pin your tray!
Hawthorne & Main says
Thank you for your words of encouragement Heaven! It was such a struggle that we just both needed time. I don’t want her to get so upset about it and have it affect her forever…. I don’t know it that would really happen but I just hate for her to be so upset. I think another month and we will try again. Glad you like the barn wood tray!
Jill says
What a cute story! The potty training will click one day soon! Good luck! That tray is gorgeous!

OMG! I remember the potty training days. I think I did traumatize my son. He is 19 now and seems fine but for a long time he would hold his poo. He got sooo constipated. It was awful. Best to let her try later. I feel for you though. It can be a rough time for all involved.
I am in love with this tray! It is so rustic and fun. Thanks for sharing.
Hawthorne & Main says
It’s rough….That is too funny about your son, I hope he has recovered, haha. I hope we can get through this soon. I actually took a break for awhile and just started up again this past week and things seem to be clicking a little bit better with her. But the poo is still tough. Thanks for the support!!

Cute story (and I love the tray). We’ll be doing the potty training thing over Christmas/New Year’s break (hopefully it doesn’t take from Christmas to New Years!)!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks for sharing on Monday Funday!

I had 3 daughters. The easiest potty training was the last…..she decided when she was ready. She went to preschool and a day care where I worked. One day, just before she was 3, I found her diaper out in the hallway. When I checked on her, she told me she wanted to go like the other kids did so she would need panties. She got her panties and we never had an accident, day or night! It was amazing. She was ready when she was ready.
Hawthorne & Main says
Oh my goodness!! That to too cute. I am so glad that you let her decide on her own when she was ready. I think I pushed her to much. I hope we get past this soon. Thanks for stopping by Linda!

When I asked my great aunt for potty training advice she looked at me like I’d lost my mind and replied “What’s the rush, he’ll do it when HE is ready.” Darned if she wasn’t right.
Congratulations on your #HomeMattersParty feature.

That is seriously the best advice ever!! I think we have turned a corner but honestly it was because she was ready and wanted to….thanks for the tip! Thanks for the feature too!

Potty training without diapers can be quite the adventure. Good luck with that! And taking up the rugs was definitely a smart move to avoid any accidents
