At our house we never really use the front door.
Is that weird?
We park in the driveway, which is all the way on the other side of the house, and use the side entrance to get inside. I always think it’s a bit funny when someone comes and knocks on my front door. I guess I forget that it’s there because I never use it!
For the longest time, this side entrance wasn’t really set up for use as an entryway. I put a shoe basket by the door right after we moved in; I have quite a few shoes and I didn’t want those to be all over the place and getting in the way.
Our other stuff like, jackets, bags, dog leash (etc., etc.) didn’t really have a place to go, which means when we wanted to walk our dog, we spent the first 15 minutes trying to find the leash. Ironically, the jackets that aren’t in use are kept in the closet by the front door; don’t ask me!!
I decided it was time to get a proper entryway by the door that we actually use.
When we bought our house, we knew that we were going to need to haul away a bunch of junk. The house was a mess and needed a ton of work. Since we weren’t ready to buy a truck ( I really just didn’t want to fork over the cash to buy one) we went a different route. Put a hitch on your car, buy a trailer and pretend like you are awesome, that’s what we did!
When I was at my parent’s house last summer, I made sure to grab a bunch of barn wood. We don’t have a truck, but I don’t let that get in the way of hauling lots of stuff. I really wish that I had gotten a picture! There I was, putt-putting down the freeway determined to bring my overflowing trailer and its load of barn wood home.
Boy, am I glad that I brought it home. I have made some really great barn wood projects and have a bunch more lined up.

I am going to share with you how I made my entryway shelf and coat rack. When I was trying to decide how I wanted my coat rack to look, I headed to Pinterest to find some inspiration. Check out my inspiration here.
I was able to find two boards that were the right size for the shelf that I wanted to make. I used my Kreg Jig to make pocket holes along the wider board. This board is the back of the shelf. Then, I used wood glue and ¾” pocket hole screws to attach the top of the shelf to the back.
After assembling the shelf, I used some 1” wood screws to attach the hooks.
I used some large screws to attach the shelf to the wall. This wall is actually made out of brick. I would recommend using a wall hanging kit from your local home improvement store.
It is so nice to have a place to hang our coats and bangs!! I am kicking myself for waiting this long to get that shelf made!
