A Day in The Life.... Hawthorne and Main

We have had too many issues with locking ourselves out of our house. We finally got new doors and new locks! Love these doors.

Keys, keys everywhere…… not one of them locked this door….

When we bought this house they handed us a whole handful of keys. No joke a big handful. I shared a picture of the keys on Instagram a while back!!

Its not like we live on a ranch with multiple buildings and places that need to be locked up. It’s just the house and a small shed.

After trying every key in the bundle I found out that none of them were for the front door or the back door…. This left us with the side door and two keys that actually worked….luckily!!!

With two keys all was well…….almost…. nope……

Even with two keys we were constantly locking ourselves out of the house.

I don’t know why but we cannot keep track of our keys….

No joke, keys are always missing……

I even made this DIY Key holder and this barn wood magnetic key holder to help me out!!

It is a real problem.

One night Mr. Main and I decided to go out for ice cream. It is a treat we often enjoy.

The car that we (I) drive right now needs a key to start it, but once it is turned on, you can remove the key and it will still run fine…….yep……pretty red neck…..Are you getting a sense about our key issues?!Like I said we have key issues at our house….

We jumped in the car and started out to go grab ice cream. Before we got out of the driveway our neighbor comes running over from across the street to bring us a few beautifully frozen salmon from their recent trip to Alaska!!

Mr. Main and I were totally excited for this delicious fishy meal that we would soon enjoy. Mr. Main grabs the key out of the ignition and runs the fish inside to the freezer. The car still on!

He runs back outside and we rush off to grab our frozen treat.

We get about 1 block away when he realizes that the keys are sitting on the kitchen table. Placed there in order to put the fish in the freezer….. He locked the side door behind him….

We decided that since we were locked out we might as well still go grab ice cream…. why not!!

We did make certain however not to turn the car off. Otherwise we would really be stuck..

When we got home is was almost starting to get dark. Mr. Main tried all sorts of ways to get into the house. He tried to pick the lock….failHe checked to see if any windows were open….. Nothing worked.

You would think that since we know we have key issues that we would put a hide a key outside… nope!!

So here I am. Sitting in the car with Miss. A, while Mr. Main tries to break into our house. She is starting to get anxious and tired after being in the car for over an hour at this point….

Pretty soon here comes our neighbor walking across the road again to asses the situation. He is our neighborhood watch!! And a real life saver!!

We told him our pathetic story about the keys…….

He thought for a moment and came up with the only plausible solution at the time……

Are you ready for it…..

Use a 2 inch round drill bit to drill a hole just below the door knob. Reach your hand into the hole and unlock the door. hhhhhmmmmmm…. ok

And here is the best part….

That’s exactly what we did!!!!

OOOOHHHHH gooooosssshhhhhh….. we really are red neck!!!!

(I tried to find a picture of the door but could not. If I come across it I will come back and add it.)

The whole drilling process took less than 10 minutes. That included him walking back to his house to grab the bit for us to borrow!!

It worked….

We left the hole in the door for about 1 month before Mr. Main patched it. Looking at it you could tell something wasn’t right. People would say “What’s with your door?”

The silver lining

I guess the silver lining to hallow core doors is that when you need to drill a hole in them because you lock yourself out it’s pretty easy!!

We knew that we would eventually be getting new doors so it didn’t bother us too much!!

I kept saving my change and about 1.5 years after we moved into the house I can finally say we have new doors!!!Holla!!!!

We got new doors for both the front and the side entrance. Both of them came from Lowes. These doors are fiberglass. They are super sturdy and I don’t have to worry about them denting like I would if we would have gotten metal.

We were debating about installing these ourselves. Once the Lowes guy came to measure the doors he told us that they were not standard size and that it would be a little bit tricky to install them. He said we would be able to still purchase standard size doors, luckily, but that a separate kit was needed to get them installed.

That was enough for me to decide I didn’t want to do it myself. It took 2 installers over 4 hours to install 2 doors. So glad we opted for them to do it. They are pros, we are not!

Oh the dust!!!!!

My entire house was covered in dust!!! It took me a whole week to clean it all up…..

Black socks with rocket dogs are in style…….right…..! hahaha

Keyless entry!!

Yay! Now I never have to worry about locking ourselves out!!

This keyless entryway has been so nice!! I cannot even shout it loud enough. I love love love it…

I am so thrilled to now have new doors! This will definitely help our cooling and heating costs! And would you believe it that I actually put a hide a key outside for the front door, just in case!

I definitely do not want to be drilling into these doors!!

Love your new doors. I definitely want to look into keyless entry although I don’t know how they work (I will have to Google search it). Thanks for sharing your story with us all.

  I love love love my door!! I really know how the keyless entry works either. For someone who has a bunch of family members who are constantly loosing their keys and locking themselves out, this is the way to go. Thanks so much for stopping by Cherie!
