Sometimes I lay in bed late at night thinking of ideas….my mind swirling and whirling. Having a great idea is one thing…bringing it to life can be a different story. Almost every project that I decide to undertake…especially if it’s large, has issues.
I try to give you my tips and tricks and sometimes painful lessons learned so that you don’t have to go through the same heart ache as me.
When I decided to make a barn door for this space I was faced with a fairly difficult decision.
DIY barn door hardware or purchase hardware…..hhmmmm

Here are a few questions that I asked to help me decide:
1- How much will the barn door be used?
2-Do I care what the barn door hardware looks like?
3-How durable do I want the hardware to be?
4-Would DIY hardware be able to support the weight of the door?
5- What is the cost difference?
Here are the answers I came up with for this specific space in my house:
1- This space gets used a lot!
2- For this space I really wanted pretty hardware. If it was for a bedroom or a closet, I might not care as much. I really wanted something pretty for this space.
3- I was a little concerned about how durable DIY hardware would be for the heavy door.
4- I knew that this particular door was going to be heavy. I didn’t want to have to worry about having the door fall down.
5- There are a few different DIY hardware techniques. All of them were less expensive than purchased hardware.
There really is no right or wrong answer here. It all depends on the type of barn door you have and where it will be going. Hopefully asking yourself these question can help you figure out if you should DIY hardware or purchase hardware.
What did I end up picking??
This is going to be a well used space. The door is quite heavy and I wanted to make sure the hardware could support the weight of the door. I ended up building the barn door and I felt it would be ok to get hardware that I liked and wouldn’t have to worry if it was strong enough for the door.

Horseshoe Vintage Barn Door Hardware from Artisan Hardware
Once the door was made, the hardware came together rather quickly. Artisan Hardware did such great work explaning all of the steps to get the door hung properly…but here are some tips. 
We used a square to ensure that the hanger was perfectly straight. All of the holes, for the hanger, were drilled with a 3/8 inch drill bit. I ended up purchasing a carbide bit because we ended up needing to drill holes in the track. I used the drill to make all of the holes. 
We used a wrench and socket to tighten the bolts on the door hanger.
Here is an up close shot of the door stop that we used.
Here is an up close image of the giant tap bolts that we used to install the track. This thing isnt going anywhere. We found all the studs ahead of time and made notes on the wall where each stud was at. 
We worried about the wood splitting with such large bolts…we ended up pre drilling every hole with a slightly smaller bit.
Because I am a do-er…but don’t always do thing in the proper order, I added tape to all the spacers. I did this so that I could come back and paint the board and trim later. The tape is so that I didn’t get paint all over the metal spacers.
We added the spacers behind the track, then inserted the bolts.
We used a socket wrench to slightly tighten all of the bolts. Once the all the bolts were up we gradually tightened them all evenly.
It took both Mr. Main and I to bring the door in…it’s very heavy. We lifted the door up and hung it up….it looks amazing. We added the floor guide to ensure the door doesn’t come off the track and it was finished.
