As part of our on going Christmas series here at Hawthorne and Main, today I am showing you how to make these faux snow covered JOY letters. Where I live, we usually don’t get too much snow so I wanted to make sure that this year we had a little touch of it inside the house. To make it feel more winter like.
Another reason why I really like these snow covered letters is because they can be left up all winter, you don’t need to take them down after Christmas is over!!
Let’s get started!

SUPPLIES:
1/4 inch MDF
White acrylic paint
jig saw
frosty snow flakes- found at walmart
Buffalo Snow Flakes-found at Walmart or Amazon Buffalo Snow Flakes
Winter Snow Flakes found at Walmart or Amazon Winter Snow Flakes
Mod Podge or craft glue
I free hand drew the letters onto my mdf and used the jigsaw to cut out the letters. You can customize how big or small you want you letters to be. I made mine about 15 inches tall.
After cutting out the letters I gave the edges a quick sanding and painted the front of each letter with white acrylic paint.
I would recommend laying down some newspapers first as this next step can get messy.
After the paint was fully dry and working with one letter at a time, I liberally applied Mod Podge to the entire front of each letter. Before the Mod Podge dried I sprinkled a combination of the regular snow flakes and the sparkly buffalo snow flakes. I sprinkled a lot on there knowing not all of it would stick. I also gently pressed down on the snow flakes so that they would stick into the glue a little bit.
I let the snow flakes sit for a few minutes on the letters before tapping the excess off. Here is what they look like after shaking off the excess.
I didn’t think to drill holes into the wood before adding the snow flakes. I probably would have been better to do it first. But, after I added the snow flakes I drilled two holes in each letter so that I could hang them from my barn wood sign.
This is a picture of the back of the letter so you can see how I hung the bakers twine.
I like that it is simple and yet it still brings a little bit of the snow indoors without the cold temperature!!

thanks beth! The fake snow was pretty fun to work with. I have a bunch more so I need to figure out a way to use the rest of it up!
