So we bought a house….. Yay!
It’s our first house… yay!
I can paint the walls what ever color I want…..yay!!
It’s a total and complete fixer upper……sigh….
I had one condition when looking to purchase a house. “I don’t want a fixer upper.”
Then reality hit. Our budget was tight and the down payment for a fixer upper was still enormous. I had to change my way of thinking. We looked and looked and looked. I thought we might never find one in our price range with the features that we wanted.
I was starting to get nervous as I was super duper pregnant.
Luckily we came across this one. With some fierce negotiations we became the owners of it in May 2013. We call it The Downtown House.
I originally wanted to call it The Downtown Green House because it is green. But, then I realized that it would most definitely get a makeover on the outside. The GREEN got the boot.
Did I mention that it’s lime green…!! Seriously…. You can see a pic of it here.
There have been, and will be a lot of changes to The Downtown House. Today I would like to share with you our kitchen makeover.
This was one of the first things that we did. We actually were able to get most of it done before we moved in. Which was a huge relief.
Here are a few before pictures to give you an idea with what we were working with.
What a difference, huh!! What do you think of this transformation!?

Oh my gosh!! I'm so impressed with the end results. Looks amazing! I can't wait to see what you did with the rest of the house!
Shonee says
Yumi, thanks! The kitchen was the biggest project so far but I still have one more bathroom that needs to be updated.
Beth, those counters were a little wild, but that matching carpet was something else. I think I swept up 2 inches of sand left behind after pulling up that carpet.
Bethany says
Wow! Such a difference, I never saw the before pictures, those blue countertops are wild!
Shonee says
They are pretty bright for sure!! Glad to have those gone!
Lexi Michelle says
Came over from justagirlandherblog to check out the before picture– wow! I never would’ve imagined the kitchen couldve turned out so good just by looking at the before. Amazing job! Super inspiring!
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks so much for stopping by Lexi!! This kitchen was a big mess before, you know if you saw the before pictures! It was a lot of work but I am so glad that we did it! Thank you so much!
sony says
I luv what you did it’s beautiful, but was that a big beautiful window in the before kitchen? I so it’s a shame you were not able to keep it and work around it.
Hawthorne & Main says
Thank you Sony, I really do love my kitchen. I guess you noticed the big window. Let me just give you the short version, the window over looked an addition that the previous owner did before we bought the house, looking into the bathroom…..hahah. I would have loved to have a window looking out the backyard. The bathroom, not so much! lol Thanksfor stopping by!
Julia says
Hi! This is beautiful! Can you tell me the dimensions of your kitchen? To the end of the fridge and to the island. We are designing our kitchen and I can’t figure out how to set it up!
Hawthorne & Main says
Hey Julia, thanks! Yay, that is so fun that you are designing your kitchen, so fun. My kitchen is about 12 feet long. The island itself is 6ft, its pretty big. But, I do love having it. Hope that helps!!
Pam says
Did you take the window out? I’am getting ready to remodel the kitchen after Christmas and wanted to take out a window how did you do it from the inside and also the outside? We have a fixer upper too it’s not easy is it haha
Hawthorne & Main says
Yes we took the window out. The only reason that we took it out was because the previous owner did a bathroom addition to the back of the house and never bothered to remove the window. Anyone washing dishes at the kitchen sink could peek in at whoever was sitting on the toilet, hahaha. To be honest, we were on such a time crunch to get into the house, I had a newborn and was paying a mortgage and rent…..we hired a company to come and remove it. It think it was fairly easy though. Good luck with our renovation, it will definitely be exciting especially if you have a fixer upper!
Lauren @ Mom Home Guide says
Your new kitchen looks fabulous! Congrats! I would love to put up a backsplash in my home’s kitchen, but am nervous to get started!
Hawthorne & Main says
I can totally relate to being nervous about taking on a project like this. I would totally recommend trying though. It was so much more cost effective than having someone do it for us, plus, it is pretty cool to tell people that we did it ourselves. Thanks for stopping by Lauren!
Shelley @ Calypso in the Country says
Your new kitchen is beautiful!

Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks Shelley! It was a lot of work but we are happy with the results. I have to say the backsplash is probably my favorite part though. Have a great weekend!

Wow, your kitchen remodel is amazing. It hardly looks like the old kitchen at all. What a beautiful transformation! I especially love your dark cabinets with all the wood grain showing.
Megan @ C'mon Get Crafty says
What an amazing transformation! That before is unreal, but the after is stunning! Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday! Pinned and tweeted!
Vineta @ The Handyman's Daughter says
What a fabulous transformation! I have a similar color blue as the countertops in my kitchen. What were people thinking back then???
Hawthorne & Main says
Agreed. My jaw sort of dropped the first time that we walked into the house, so much royal blue. I love color but that was too much! haha
CD Loken says
Absolutely gorgeous kitchen makeover! I LOVE the cabinets!!
Hawthorne & Main says
Thanks! We debated for quite some time about what colors to choose. They pressure was on. We ended up going dark and I have to say that I am pleased with them.
Diane says
Fabulous kitchen make over. You will enjoy it for years! Could you tell us about the counter tops? Souce name etc
Hawthorne & Main says
Thank you Diane! We ordered the counter tops from our local HD. The granite color is delicious gold. It has a ton of veins and it really quite unique. Let me know if you have more questions!
Diane says
Thanks for the info, we are getting ready for a bathroom update and I think this may work. It took me over 3 months to find a slab of granite that “spoke” to me for our kitchen. Your granite is beautiful and will be a great place for me to start!
Debbie says

Val says
I know this is a few years later after the remodel, but what type of wood and stain are your cabinets? They are beautiful. Another question. Are you still happy with the darker stain? I’m remodeling now and need serious advice as this color and style of cabinets is what I was thinking to purchase. Warmest Regards.
Vadara Quartz says
What an amazing transformation! I’m glad you got rid of that wall/island monstrosity. Reading through the comments, I’m also interested in how you changed those windows and sealed it, makes the before and afters look like completely different kitchens. Once again, bravo!
Tracy says
I like watching makeover post! This difference is really inspiring! Someday I will do somethings with my old kitchen.
